Cases of COVID-19 have surged in the Qikiqtaaluk region, the Government of Nunavut Department of Health announced Wednesday.

Iqaluit is especially impacted by the surge that began over the holidays, the GN stated in a news release.

In determining there has been an increase, the GN looked at factors such as PCR test results, testing at community health centres and rapid antigen test results reported through the COVID-19 hotline, spokesperson Nadine Purdy told Nunatsiaq News.

The GN stopped publicly reporting COVID-19 case counts when the territorial public health emergency was lifted on April 11 last year.

Between Nov. 26 and Dec. 17, three COVID-19 patients were hospitalized or medevaced, the GN indicated.

On Dec. 15, Nunavut Health Minister John Main and chief public health officer Dr. Sean Wachtel warned of a rising number of viruses in the territory, including COVID-19.

To protect against the spread of the coronavirus, the GN’s advice includes getting vaccinated and boosted when eligible, practicing social distancing, wearing a mask in health-care facilities and self-isolating if you are feeling sick.

The COVID-19 hotline is available Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 1-888-975-8601 for anyone who has tested positive or has concerns about COVID-19.

How’s your measles? Catch some mumps lately? How about rubella or tetanus?
Just because you are afraid of a needle doesn’t mean the rest of us want to be irresponsible and cause harm to the immuno-comprimised, kids or elders.

No genius. What Only a Sheep is saying is that at present those diseases are practically non-existent because of mandatory vaccinations against them. Go back to school and educate yourself before making uninformed comments.

Yup because the “common cold” has a 1.5% fatality rate and is killing 8,000 people per day in China right now. Give your head a shake!

The media have been light with department of health lately. Since 2019 has the department added a single bed or ventilator to qgh? How has it fared for staffing on a percentage basis?

Generally Things aren’t as bad as nor as dire as people say. Stay calm, listen to reason. 1 thing for certain is that people have had it with lock downs, that won’t be revisited, there is not a snowball’s chance in Hell of that happening.

So glad I didn’t take that shot they call the vaccine. No long term studies of it on health effects. So much has happened out there concerning this shot and if you seek out the truth or question the narrative or even speak the truth you are shadow banned and even threatened with prison. Heck, we even got segregated, ridiculed, lost our careers, not allowed to hospital, couldn’t take the plane. How is it possible people can be so blind. I worry when the jabbed start to get sick. Again, soo glad.

“To protect against the spread of the coronavirus, the GN’s advice includes getting vaccinated and boosted when eligible,…..” this jab doesnt reduce spread or stop transmission. It aint what they are selling/advertising to you but go ahead go get boosted.

    (Small town Nunavut)
There’s no doubt that Covid has killed a significant number of people. Covid policy has not killed quite so many, but …
When “The Pandemic” broke we were told to only go to the Health Centre in an emergency. I’ve seen no public announcement indicating that policy has changed.
    So what constitutes “an emergency”?
I have bad knees and have difficulty walking any distance. Probably NOT an emergency (I guess!).
What about my shortness of breath and occasional chest pain. When I have pain I would never make it to the Health Centre. If I rest for a few minutes the pain goes away. No pain, no emergency??
I’m also a cancer survivor. Pre-pandemic I could get the routine follow-up that my oncologist had suggested. I’ve had no follow-up at all for the past three years – not even routine blood-work. I guess that’s because it’s not an emergency (yet!).
If I call the Health Centre for an appointment I won’t get one for at least three weeks and, more likely, four or five weeks. Then it’s the nurse who decides if I am worthy to see the exalted doctor – IF there happens to be one in town.
I have no doubt that being a victim of the Canadian “Health Care” system has shortened my life expectancy by at least a couple of years. Sadly, I’m not the only one in this sinking life boat.

I received my 4th dosed, 2 were booster shots. I am not a public person, stay at home person. My son caught the virus in school.

Imagine if I didn’t receive the vaccine? I likely would have been sent out considering how poor my immune system is. Covid is not a joke and I don’t wish it upon anyone.

Conformism is not working out so well in our day and age. The people who make regulation/rules do have alternate reasons for doing so. Research more often than not is suppressed, research that would cast doubt on the effectiveness of the rules and regulations. The better thing to do would be to give people who are already unwell (before viral infection) their space 🙂

    The public housing system

  13. Posted by Martha on

Glad to see by the comments and upvotes that people are waking up to this, and other important topics. The mainstream media (including this news paper) doesn’t usually have public interest in mind. So many comments are not posted, and I think if they were then people who read the comment sections would see that they are not alone, and the seemingly mass majority is not against them. We have been reduced to talking in riddles to get important points across. Pureblood and proud of it. Feeling sorry for those whose livelihood’s were threatened or were duped into it.
