Decentralization by the numbers

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

IQALUIT — The following chart shows the number of decentralized Nunavut government jobs slated for each of 11 communities last fall, compared with the number of jobs that the Nunavut government has confirmed so far.

The column “Targeted Numbers” shows the Office of the Interim Commissioner’s target numbers last fall; the column “Confirmed to Date” shows the jobs that the Nunavut government has authorized so far.

The extra 159 positions in Iqaluit include 65 corrections workers, 31 computer technicians and nine hospital administrators not included in the OIC’s plan last fall.

Pangnirtung’s 27-job shortfall is accounted for by the movement of the Baffin District Education Council to Pond Inlet. Baker Lake’s 35-job shortfall is accounted for by the unresolved status of Nunavut’s Workers’ Compensation Board.

The Nunavut government says they will look at stand-alone institutions that could be moved into those two communities within the next three years.
