Iqaluit drivers can expect a longer commute through downtown next week.

The city announced a weeklong closure of Mivvik Street in a public service announcement Friday afternoon. The temporary closure is to allow for construction work on the road that cuts through much of the city’s core.

Workers will be excavating, disposing of old materials, installing a new road base and then repaving the street, the announcement said.

As a result, the city is detouring traffic away from a nearly 500-metre stretch of Mivvik Street, extending from the Discovery Hotel to the Arnaitok Arena.

The closure also will prohibit traffic from crossing the Four Corners, one of Iqaluit’s busiest intersections.

“During the closure, access to properties along Mivvik Street may be limited, and residents should anticipate minor delays,” the announcement reads.

Work is scheduled to be completed Aug. 10, the city says.
