Dog tags once again available in Iqaluit after city restocks
City reports increase in owners registering their dogs after a council amended animal control bylaw earlier this month

The City of Iqaluit has restocked its dog tag supply after a surge in demand caused a nearly week-long shortage.
The city saw an increase in people registering their pets after council approved an animal control bylaw amendment June 10 that shortens the time municipal enforcement officers must hold a loose animal to 24 hours before it can be euthanized. Previously, it was seven days.
“The continued demand for dog tags reflects growing awareness of the updated animal control bylaw and the importance of proper pet identification,” a news release issued by the city Wednesday said.
After the spike in demand, the city’s supply of animal tags was “nearly depleted” with just 24 left at one point, a city release on June 18 said. At that point, 264 tags had been given to pet owners this year including 173 distributed in the past two months.
For all of last year, only 151 tags were given out.
Registration and collar tags help identify an animal’s owner in case it becomes loose.
“We encourage all dog owners to pick up their tags as soon as possible,” the city release said Wednesday.
Tags can be picked up at city hall or at the city operations centre.
