Iqaluit reopens main roads to traffic; city facilities remain closed Friday

City says update coming later Friday evening for rec buildings’ reopening

By Nunatsiaq News

Updated Friday, March 1 at 4 p.m.

Iqaluit continues to reopen after a blizzard Thursday forced closure of government buildings, shut down mail delivery and kept vehicles off the roads.

On Friday afternoon, in a news release the city announced main streets have been cleared of snow and can accommodate traffic once again. Heavy equipment crews continue to work on side streets.

However, all city buildings including recreation facilities will remain closed for the evening.

The release said residents could expect another update Friday evening on the opening times for city recreation facilities on Saturday.

“Trucked services will resume [Saturday] morning,” the city said.

While the side streets are being cleared of snow, the city asked residents to exercise extreme caution in travelling.

In addition to the heavy snow, some residents reported their houses were shaking during the high winds brought on by the blizzard. Early Friday, Canada Post announced it had suspended mail services Friday due to safety concerns for employees, and that regular service would resume after conditions approve.

Have we confirmed with someone in Kivalliq whether this is actually necessary or not?

Might I suggest considering a year-long contract in the Kivalliq Region, to gain a firsthand experience of their blizzards? Such an opportunity could provide valuable insights into the meteorological phenomena of the region, which may be of great significance to you in your professional or academic pursuits. I encourage you to weigh the pros and cons of such an undertaking and make an informed decision accordingly.

Perhaps Iqaluit commenters should heed the wisdom of the folks from the Kivalliq.
I lived in the Kivalliq for several years. Let me share with the Hamlet of Iqaluit a secret. We planned our blizzards for the weekend so that our local operations didn’t have to close down

Your local operations shut down on tons of random Monday’s. No storms required.
