Earth Day giveaway rallies environmentalists

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Qulliq Energy Corporation gave away three energy-efficient washers and dryers during Earth Day last Saturday.

Contestants had to guess how many barrels of fuel are burned to power Iqaluit each day. Those who correctly guessed between 160 and 190 barrels were entered in a raffle draw.

The winners are Kirt Ejesiak of Iqaluit, Mabel Aknavigak of Cambridge Bay and Paula Akkuaidjuk of Repulse Bay.

Energy-efficient washers use about half as much energy and water than regular models.

QEC vice-president Jamie Flaherty made the announcements in Iqaluit on Saturday during a draw held in the Nakasuk parking lot. Energy minister Ed Picco, Inuit Circumpolar Conference Chair Sheila Watt-Cloutier and the commissioner of Nunavut, Ann Hanson, also attended the draw.

The Nunavut Energy Centre, a division of QEC, hosted the contest.
