Education huge burden for southern students

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Maggie Putulik’s letter to the editor July 2 contains a lot of truth. She didn’t mention however that many southern students finish their university education $20,000 to $30,000 in debt because they have had to take out loans to pay for their education.

Nor did she mention that northern Qallunaaq students studying in the South have to pay their own way. It is true that transportation costs are covered, but, unlike their friends they went through elementary and high school with, they must pay the full shot for books, residence fees, and most of the tuition fees themselves.

Many must feel very discouraged! Loans are available from the government but they have to be paid back one way or another. Such discrepencies are difficult to explain to young people.

However, all that aside, those that complete their schooling should indeed feel proud of their accomplishment.
