Education is everyone’s concern
I am writing to help inform the voters of Iqaluit why I am seeking a position on the Iqaluit District Education Authority, since according to your article on Sept. 19, I could not be reached for comment.
I am writing because I feel education is everyone’s concern. Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders and education is one of the building blocks of the foundation of how they turn out. The education that children receive now will impact Iqaluit and ultimately the territory in a few short years. Quality of education affects everyone, even those of us without children. You do not have to be a parent or teacher to be concerned about the level of education our community is offering.
The city of Iqaluit has grown tremendously in even the two years I’ve called it home. The growth of the community is putting stress on all areas of Iqaluit, including the schools. The loss of Joamie School only added to this. I am seeking a position on the IDEA so that I may contribute to the future planning of education in Iqaluit, so that students don’t have to worry about not having a classroom to return to each fall.
To close, I would like to say that I feel I can make a difference and a positive contribution to Iqaluit through a position on the IDEA. I am hoping that Iqalungmiut will give me the opportunity to do so.
