Edward Attagutaluk is Aggu riding’s MLA after receiving nearly half the votes cast in Monday’s new election in Igloolik.
The results were posted Tuesday to the Elections Nunavut website. The race featured six candidates.
“Congratulations to all the Aggu riding candidates. Thank you to the people of Aggu riding for believing in me,” Attagutaluk said on Facebook following his victory.
“Even if you did not vote for me, I will do my best to represent Aggu riding.”
Aggu voters returned to the polls Monday because of a tie in the riding on Oct. 27, which was voting day across the territory. Two candidates were originally on the ballot — Joanna Quassa and Erasmus Ivvalu.
Voter turnout was a little over 33 per cent, with 190 of the 572 voters on Aggu’s voter list coming out to vote in early polls and election day.
Results posted Tuesday show Attagutaluk with 86 votes, Quassa with 26 votes, George Qaunaq receiving 25 votes, Ivvalu with 24, Louis Tapardjuk getting 20 and Louisa Iyerak with eight. There was one rejected ballot.
The tie vote meant Aggu was not represented in the leadership forum on Dec. 18 where MLAs convened to choose their cabinet and premier.

Ok Ted everyone is looking now, let’s see what you do. Show us you will make things better.
Who did he vote for as premier or cabinet? Consensus government needs to be re-thought out or partisan. Partisan would be ideal with devolution so a party leader can give a platform on what they intend to do with lands and resources.
But it’s wild a government was formed without Aggu involved.
Well only 33% of Aggu voted anyway so it’s not like we really show that we care anyway. And he was elected by 15% of eligible voters (on the list). And if you look at that on a Nunavut wide level that is 0.004% of Nunavuts approx 22,000 eligible voters. And Igloolik is the 4th largest community in Nunavut.
