Elbows up: Inuit-themed jersey finds place in Carney photo

An Inuit-themed hockey jersey photo-bombed a photo-op last week in Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office.
As Carney met April 8 in Ottawa with Ontario MP Marilyn Gladu — who had just left the Conservative caucus in the House of Commons to join Carney’s governing Liberals — a custom hockey jersey given to the prime minister by Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami president Natan Obed could be seen hanging in the background in Carney’s office.
It was an ITK All-Stars jersey.

Every year, the ITK All-Stars hockey team invites a team of Indigenous hockey players to face off for the Tea and Bannock Cup.
In last year’s game on June 21, which was National Indigenous People’s Day, Carney dropped the puck for the ceremonial opening face-off before the ITK All-Stars took on the First Nations Smash Hawks.
“Dropped the puck to open the Tea and Bannock Cup this afternoon,” Carney said afterward on Facebook. “Two proud Indigenous teams facing off on the ice, and a great game to mark National Indigenous Peoples Day.”
Obed is an avid player who has called hockey his “first passion.” After the game, he presented the team jersey to Carney.
