Emergency crews in Iqaluit responded to a fire at the city’s garbage dump Thursday afternoon.
Thick white smoke could be seen billowing in a southeasterly direction. It could be seen from many parts of the city.
The road to the landfill was closed until further notice, the City of Iqaluit said in an announcement issued by email at 6:30 p.m.
Only outbound traffic leaving the causeway area was being permitted, and a law enforcement vehicle was on the scene directing traffic.
