Emergency supplies for Nunavik

IQALUIT — Quebec’s public security department has offered to supply Nunavik, at no cost, with material that could be used in emergency situations — an offer that’s been picked up by the Kativik Regional Government.

Next summer the Ungava and Hudson Bays will each receive 400 beds, 372 blankets, 149 women’s toiletry kits, 147 men’s toiletry kits, 330 pillows, 145 sleeping bags, 100 foam mattresses and 250 air mattresses.

Nunavik’s lack of emergency supplies was underlined at the coroner’s inquest into the deaths, which occurred in the Jan. 1, 1999, avalanche in Kangiqsualujjuaq.
