Enraged at beer company’s use of Inukshuk

We, the secondary 3 students at Jaanimmarik school in Kuujjuaq, Nunavik, are enraged about how the Inukshuk is being treated by the Ontario brewing company, Magnotta Brewery.

We disagree with an important Inuit symbol being associated with alcohol because the implied message is that the Inukshuk is a symbol for intoxication. This is reinforcing the stereotype that Inuit are alcoholics.

In addition, we are disgusted that we, the Inuit, were not consulted about the use of our cultural heritage to make beer profits.

At the very least, we the Inuit would like an apology from Magnotta Brewery, and would like to see the Inukshuk receive legal protection so that the Inukshuk can regain its former respect.
