Escaped inmate back in jail

Moseesee Nakashook is back in jail after escaping from the Baffin Correctional Centre Sept. 18.

Nakashook fled the medium-security facility after digging a hole under the chain link fence while fellow prisoners distracted a guard, a source told Nunatsiaq News.

Nakashook was in remand awaiting trial on an aggravated assault charge.

He evaded police for four days before he was found Sept. 23 at a house in Happy Valley. A resident recognized Nakashook and called police.

Nakashook was arrested without incident and now faces one charge of escape from lawful custody, said Cpl. Dave Kalist.

“We relied on the public to make the arrest,” Kalist said.

Ron McCormick, Nunavut’s director of corrections, said prisoner supervision at BCC, among other policy changes, have been tightened since the incident.
