A community walk is set for Iqaluit on Wednesday night as part of National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

For the event held Canada-wide each year on Dec. 6, the Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women Council is asking Nunavummiut to honour and remember those lost to gender-based violence.

It is encouraging people to wear a purple or white ribbon that day and observe a moment of silence at 11 a.m. or attend a local vigil.

In Iqaluit, the council along with the Government of Nunavut, the Nunavut Law Society, the YWCA and RCMP have organized the community walk.

The walk will begin at Four Corners at 6 p.m., and end at 6:15 p.m. at Nunavut Arctic College and be followed by a remembrance ceremony.

On Monday, Gary Anandasangaree, the federal minister for Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, announced $13 million in funding for 31 Indigenous-led projects aimed at ending violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQ+ people.

One of the funded projects is Inuit Count, led by the Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada to develop data-based strategies and methodologies specific to missing and murdered Inuit women, girls and those who are gender-diverse.

“We have to put an end to the national crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls,” Anandasangaree said in a news release.

He said those projects “will contribute to healing while looking forward to identifying future solutions and strategies to end violence” against those identified groups.

We are on the right track with the gender anti-violence message. Now to bring the beast of international military conflict down, that would be a great achievement if it were achieved/accomplished.
