A house fire Tuesday in Iqaluit is believed to have been caused by “unsafe, makeshift, amateur wiring,” according to an update provided by the city on Wednesday morning.
No one was home at building 147A on Nipisa Street in Lower Iqaluit around lunchtime when the fire was reported, and no one was injured, according to the update.
Two rooms were damaged and there is extensive smoke damage throughout the unit.
Nineteen firefighters worked to put out the blaze, starting at about noon. They extinguished the fire in 15 minutes and were able to leave the scene within two hours, according to the release.
Municipal bylaw officers, RCMP and Qulliq Energy Corp. staff were also involved in the response.
