A fire that ripped through the old legion hall in Rankin Inlet last month is being called arson by the local detachment of the RCMP.

In the early hours of May 5, fire was reported at the building, which was being used as a dining hall by workers constructing a new long-term care facility in the community.

An exterior wall was damaged in the fire. No injuries were reported and no other buildings were damaged, RCMP said at the time.

“The fire investigators determined the fire to be arson,” said RCMP Sgt. Patrick Frennette in an interview Monday. “We have no suspects at this point.”

Frennette said police are continuing their investigation.

Living in Rankin Inlet is like living in the middle of a garbage dump. Filth everywhere you look. I guess the community is just used to it. It’s too bad though, it can only make mental health worse.

Lived there for about 15 years, moved about 4 years ago. Great community with wonderful people. But I sure do not miss the garbage all over the place. You really notice in the summer so we started spending more time in the south as time went on. It got harder and harder to go back. And yes I could feel my mental health improve when I got to the east coast.

most likely targeted because of the group using it. the GLFL workers are super disrespectful to the community and your typical Quebec rejects who cant get a job down south. Little to no locals hired on at the project.

I think that is the real outfit who is doing the work. I know that’s who the job application says when I applied.

I think the memo has been received: arson is not going to be punished. People are getting away with aggravated sexual assault and murder… arson what?

Eh, see this as Nunavut’s contribution to the wildfire smoke.
