A fire at the old legion building in Rankin Inlet early Thursday caused “extensive damage to an exterior wall,” according to an RCMP news release.

The building was being used as a private dining facility for employees of the company building a new long-term care facility in the hamlet, fire Chief Mark Wyatt said. It provided three meals a day for approximately 50 workers.

Five firefighters, including the chief, were on the scene for two hours, Wyatt said.

The fire was extinguished by the fire department and no surrounding properties or buildings were damaged, according to the RCMP. No damage estimate was provided.

RCMP said officers responded to the fire at about 3:30 a.m.

The cause of the fire is unknown, Wyatt said. The incident is under investigation, according to both police and fire departments.
