Flight to Chicago diverts to Iqaluit due to medical emergency

An Etihad Airways flight from Abu Dhabi bound for Chicago was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Iqaluit on Tuesday morning after a passenger required urgent medical attention.

Etihad Airways Flight EY009 departed Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport, in the capital city of the United Arab Emirates, headed to Chicago O’Hare International Airport on Tuesday. However, it was diverted to Iqaluit’s airport, landing at 6:50 a.m., according to the FlightAware flight tracking app.

In an emailed statement, Jill Weymes, a spokesperson for Etihad Airways which is based in the UAE, said the flight was diverted due to a passenger on board requiring immediate medical treatment.

She did not provide information about the passenger’s age, gender and condition, or whether the passenger later continued to Chicago.

The flight, an Airbus A350-1000 twin-engine jet, departed Iqaluit at 9:13 a.m. Tuesday to resume its journey to Chicago, according to FlightAware.
