There was a lot to celebrate in the summer of 1993.

The Montreal Canadiens had just won the Stanley Cup.

The Toronto Blue Jays were flying high after winning their first World Series championship and were soaring toward their second.

The Nunavut Land Claim Agreement had just been signed in May of that year, setting the stage for the creation of the territory six years later.

Maybe that’s why that year’s Canada Day festivities looked extra festive.

When Nunatasiq News dived into its file photos, there were a lot from 1993 — now 30 years ago.

During Nunatsiaq News’ 50th anniversary this year, we are taking a weekly look through pictures the paper has taken or received over the years.

Information about these photos is sketchy. In a lot of cases, very little is known about them.

That’s why we’re turning to readers to help us identify who is in the photo and tell us what’s happening. If you recognize yourself or someone you know, let us know.

Last week, we got help from a reader to identify the people in three of them.

Send an email to editors@nunatsiaq.com or add a comment to the bottom of the slideshow and we’ll add that information to the photo.

Scroll through previous weeks’ collections of file photos in the Nunatsiaq News at 50 special section to see other old pictures and read the updated captions to see how readers have helped shed light on them.
