The former senior administrative officer of the hamlet of Taloyoak and his associate both failed to appear in a Nunavut court this week for charges related to fraudulently handling the hamlet’s finances.

According to a news release issued by Nunavut’s RCMP, former senior administrative officer Ghulam Murtaza, 60, is charged with fraud, theft over $5,000 and breach of trust, while his associate, Javed Mustafa, 33, of Mississauga, Ontario, was charged with fraud and theft over $5,000.

The charges flow from a complaint made by Taloyoak’s hamlet council to the local RCMP detachment on Feb 16, 2017. That prompted an RCMP investigation that led to charges being laid on May 22, 2019.

Both men were summoned to appear before the Nunavut Court of Justice on Monday, Aug. 12, but failed to appear.

Their next court date is Sept. 9. Should they miss that as well, a bench warrant—a type of arrest warrant—will be released, according to the RCMP.
