Former MP Romeo Saganash has been charged with sexual assault.

Nunatsiaq News received confirmation of the charge on Monday from Winnipeg Police Service.

Saganash, formerly the NDP MP for Abitibi—Baie-James—Nunavik—Eeyou from 2011 to 2019, was arrested and charged on June 27 for an alleged sexual assault that took place on May 1 in Winnipeg, said Const. Jason Michalyshen.

The charge was first reported by APTN on Friday.

Michalyshen said Saganash is due to appear in court Tuesday.

He said police are not sharing any further details about the alleged incident at this time.
