Four people are interested in becoming the next president of Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., one of the most influential organizations in the territory.

When nominations closed Friday afternoon, the following people had put their names forward to run for president: Nicole Camphaug, Andrew Nakashuk, Cathy Towtongie, Jeremy Tunraluk.

The list of candidates published on NTI’s website Friday is unofficial. Election rules give candidates until 5 p.m. local time on Monday to remove their name from the list.

Inuit beneficiaries in Nunavut will vote on Dec. 9 for the new president of NTI, the organization responsible for ensuring obligations made to Nunavut Inuit under the Nunavut Agreement are upheld.

There are five ways to vote in the election, including on election day, at an advance poll Dec. 2, by mobile poll, proxy vote or mail-in ballot, NTI’s election website says.

Aluki Kotierk held the position for two terms, but announced at the organization’s annual general meeting in October that she would not seek a third term. She was first elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2021.

Nunatsiaq News will have more coverage of the NTI presidential race next week, after the list of candidates becomes official.

Cathy Towtongie tells it like it is. She the only one that steps up and says this teen pregnancies in nunavut is a crises. Hope she wins.

Clearly written by someone who never had to work with the woman and witnessed the jaw-dropping nonsense first hand.

If one is gonna champion our life-identity-our tradition-our future hopes. One needs to at the least be able to read-speak Inuktitut.. Othwerwise you have a simple result of what Natan is doing with ITK- he and the out going president of nti has turned these once strong Inuit focused organizations to a health-social department arm of the federal government, and basically crying about the past. No future focus, no effort i. creating a bridge with Canada even with our government. Nicole, let’s hear you do an Inuktut only interview on the radio and Igalaaq.

do be getting you “false hopes” too high based on thumbs up. Majority of nunavut communities are not hung up on these types of platforms.

Inukness? I agree. Do you know that KIA Central had a board member who neither can’t speak Inuktut and can’t read and write in Inutut and Qablunatuut. This is shameful, we are electing illiterates because of popularity. Shame. Both southern most mainland members KIA are shamefully Illiterates and can’t read or write neither. Both of them.

With bigger communities that gets a lot of activities, social services and health care should be priorities. Often too that RCMP that goes to Nunavut for their two three year services, some locals gets in trouble right before they leave. They should be monitored carefully of their actions, social services and health care nurses that are ready to leave with their RCMP partner, and often for no reason, locals gets arrested and gets sends to hospitals down south. That is way too much control. It should be known from politics.

Interesting list of candidates, even the CEOs EA is trying. I was hoping for some younger Inuit to put their names in, I see one on this list and I will be voting for him.
