A fox that attacked two dogs in Rankin Inlet on April 30 is being tested for rabies, the Health Department announced Tuesday.

One of the dogs that was attacked will be euthanized and the other is in quarantine and being monitored for signs of rabies, department spokesperson Danarae Sommerville said in a news release.

She advised people in Rankin Inlet to remain on the lookout for foxes due to the dangers of rabies.

Anyone bitten or scratched by a fox or a dog should go to a health centre and report the incident immediately. Treatment must be started quickly after exposure, as rabies infections are nearly always fatal if left untreated, Sommerville said.

Domestic animals that spend time tied up outdoors should be monitored for signs of rabies, which can include behaving strangely, staggering, frothing at the mouth, choking or making unusual noises.

Animals exhibiting these signs should be avoided and reported to a regional environmental health officer at 867-645-6660 or a conservation officer at 867-645-8084.

Any foxes or wolves seen wandering near communities should also be reported to the conservation officer.

Why do so many of these attacks end in a dog being destroyed when you can literally walk up to the health center and say “I need this many rabies shots for my dog team.” And administer them yourself.

Or are these foxes just Chuck Norris and kicking these dogs asses? XD

Dogs are not toys or playthings for your kids nor yard ornaments. They come with responsibility. Vaccinate your dogs please. The vaccines are free. You are putting community members at risk by not vaccinating your dog. Keep your dogs tied up. If that is too much hassle for you, Do not get a puppy which grow up to be dogs that need proper care.
