A fox that was euthanized last week after showing signs of rabies in Arviat has tested positive for the virus, the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Health says.

The advisory follows an earlier notice on Oct. 14, when officials reported a fox behaving abnormally had been euthanized and sent for testing.

The fox made contact with several dogs in the community on Oct. 13 and those animals are now under confinement, the department said Wednesday in a public health advisory.

Health officials are urging residents to be on alert for foxes and to report any animals showing unusual or aggressive behaviour.

“Treatment must be started quickly after exposure, as rabies infections are almost always fatal” if left untreated, the department said, advising anyone bitten or scratched by a fox or dog to visit the local health centre immediately.

The department also reminded residents to monitor pets tied up outdoors for signs of illness or behavioural changes. Symptoms of rabies can include aggression, staggering, frothing at the mouth, choking or making unusual noises.

Wild animals infected with rabies may also appear unusually tame or approach people without fear.

Residents who suspect their dog has been bitten or attacked by a fox should contact the Environmental Health Officer at 867-983-5241 or the Conservation Officer at 867-857-2976.
