Fuel prices went up in Nunavut, the territorial government announced Friday, as an increase in the federal carbon tax took effect for April 1.
Rates for the federal carbon tax went up on gasoline and diesel, as well as other fuel products sold throughout Nunavut.
New pricing resulted in the following price changes:
- Gasoline increased to 1.1943 per litre outside of Iqaluit. (In Iqaluit, prices are set by individual vendors.)
- Diesel for home heating increased to $1.1487 per litre outside of Iqaluit.
- Diesel for home heating increased to $1.0828 per litre in Iqaluit.
- Diesel for vehicles increased to $1.2944 per litre.
The Nunavut Carbon Rebate, a GN initiative, offsets the Federal Carbon Tax by 50 per cent and reduces the amount Nunavummiut pay for fuel, meaning that despite the increase, they will only pay half the carbon tax amount at the pump.
Aviation fuels and diesel for generating electricity are exempt from the Carbon Tax.
Thank you to all the NDP/ Liberal voters for making this happen.
Aviation fuels are exempt? Perhaps this has something to do with some hamlets receiving Jetfuel instead of diesel for their machines?
Them politicians are slave labourers now. Us hardworking workers are over worked underpaid now. Pretty soon, taxing us just for being alive.
Dear Nunatsiaq, it would be cool to know what the price increased from. So, the increase expressed as either a percent or from the former price to the new price.
Went up about 2.5 cents
Government of Nunavut should not increase the price of diesel and gas until next sealift. It was already bought and delivered.
Its a Federal Tax. Nunavut cant do anything about that.
At $1.19/L Nunavut likely has some of the cheapest gas in the whole country.. don’t see what the big uproar is. In some places down South it was over $2.00/L at one point in the last month.
At $1.19/L, Nunavut definitely has the cheapest has in the country. The next cheapest at the moment is in Calgary at $1.55/L
The carbon tax is a classic ponzi scheme. Funnel money away from everyone to hand money to a few select others. Shameful and despicable.
I don’t think you know what a Ponzi Scheme is.
I defined it in my comment. Nice try though.
The government has implemented this destructive tax on everything, promising lucrative returns and benefits to Canadians for paying it. In reality, the government is filling its coffers while the rest of us go broke with massive increases in cost to literally everything, and we will never, ever receive the benefits we’ve been promised.
“Funneling money away from everyone to hand money to a few select others” is not a Ponzi scheme. A Ponzi scheme promises returns to investors that, in actuality, are paid by the introduction of more investors. It is not sustainable because when the increasing number of investors needed to sustain the scheme dries up, the whole scheme fails.
.
The carbon tax is a punitive measure intended to reduce carbon consumption. It does not require additional investors. It’s the same as a liquor tax, or a tobacco tax. It’s the same as Ontario’s non-resident speculation tax. It’s just a disincentive to try to achieve a certain result. Whether it works or doesn’t work, it isn’t a Ponzi scheme.
.
I reiterate, I don’t think you know what a Ponzi Scheme is.
