Full Gospel minister gets jail term

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Last week in Salluit, Lucassie Kanarjuak, 58, of Ivujivik, was sentenced to three years in jail for two sexual assault charges after pleading guilty before Judge Donald Bissonette.

Kanarjuak received a sentence of 36 months for a rape committed in the 1980s on a minor under 14.

Kanarjuak also received a six-month sentence for incitement to sexual touching with a minor under 14. This sentence will be served concurrently with the 36-month sentence.

In 1999, Kanarjuak, a long-time Full Gospel minister, was acquitted on sex charges involving a minor after two confused years of delays.

In addition to his position as pastor of Ivujivik’s Full Gospel congregation, Kanarjuak was known locally for many years as the proprietor of a small store called the Mushroom Shop, so-named for its ever-plentiful stock of canned mushrooms.
