Qikiqtaalungmiut celebrate Baffin Inuit Games
Athletes from across Baffin Island assembled in Qikiqtarjuaq this month for the 2002 Baffin Inuit Games.
The games were held in the Inuksuit School gym from Sept. 5 to 8.
About 39 men and women took part in traditional sports ranging from the head pull to the two-foot high kick. Inuit sports at the Baffin games include all the games that make up the Inuit sports component of the Arctic Winter Games.
Medals go to those who place in the top three, and points are awarded to athletes who place in the top 10 in each event. Points are used to calculate overall athletes and communities.
Pond Inlet took the trophy for the top team, with 299 points. Members of the team took home a large cup to display for the coming year.
The host community for next year’s games will be chosen in Iqaluit next month.
