Gang attacks police in Kangirsuk
Five young men from Kangirsuk, some under 18, were arrested and face serious charges in connection with an incident that occurred on Sept. 26 in Kangirsuk.
Police allege the group, armed with hockey sticks and two-by-fours, kept two Kativik Regional Police constables inside their transit lodging. The group apparently broke up when the group got word that additional police had arrived in Kangirsuk.
KRPF police chief Brian Jones said the positive element to an otherwise very stressful stand-off was that “everybody chipped in to help.”
“We have to work with what we have in the communities to link up all this support,” Jones said. “We’re there to help and nobody likes to see these kinds of situations. We have to deal with it. “
Those arrested following the incident face charges included uttering threats, committing an assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon “for a purpose dangerous to public peace,” and mischief causing damage over $5,000 to property and to a police truck.
