Getting a head start on Iqaluit’s community cleanup day

Chance Ross got his gloves on, brought out a black bag and started picking up litter in Iqaluit on Tuesday afternoon. Ross said that he wanted to do something about the garbage in town and realized the problem was not that hard to address. He added that “you just pick up some gloves and a bag.” The City of Iqaluit is planning to host its community cleanup day Friday. (Photo by David Lochead)

The amount of garbage in our communities is akin to some third world countries. Littering has sadly become so normal here

Of all the things we did in the north that was the most useless. 364 days of the majority of people tossing crap around, one day of a handfulll of people cleaning it up. Repeated for over 40 years. Does that make sense, certainly not to anyone who does the clean up.

It’s shameful that a person can not keep their property clean. It’s not so hard. Where is the bylaw? We have a bylaw for dirty properties. It should also be written in leases that you must keep your rental clean.

Never mind a head start, mess will only come back sooner.
