Global demand for sealskin growing

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

An increased global demand for sealskin means domestic stocks in Greenland are in short supply, said Hans Enoksen, Greenland’s minister for hunting.

According to figures from the Greenland Skin Trading company, 74,000 tanned skins were sold for export last year, while 19,000 skins were sold to Greenlandic sewing centres.

Most communities have publicly-funded sewing centres which cost slightly more than one million krøner ($200,000) to support.
