The Government of Nunavut’s Department of Health is encouraging women to do what they can to minimize their risk of developing breast cancer.
Breast cancer is the third most common type of cancer among women in Nunavut and the most common cancer among Canadian women, according to a news release from the Department of Health.
They suggest that women should have a conversation with their healthcare provider this month, which is breast cancer awareness month, about breast health and what actions they can take to help lower the risk of developing the disease.
The risk of developing breast cancer increases if you are over 50, are overweight or have a family history of the disease, according to the news release.
The Department of Health also reminds women that early detection of the disease can save lives.
Common signs and symptoms to look out for include the following:
- Feeling a lump in the breast.
- Swelling of all or part of the breast.
- Pain, irritation or dimpling of the skin on the breast.
- The nipple or skin on the breast looks red, scaly or thickened.
The Department of Health says that if you have any of these signs or symptoms, you should visit your health centre or speak to your community health representative to book an appointment.
