All Government of Nunavut offices in Clyde River are closed Tuesday due to severe weather.

The territorial government sent out a weather bulletin by email about the situation Tuesday morning.

A winter storm brought winds gusting up to 80 km/h overnight Monday, leading to almost no visibility in the blowing snow, said Environment Canada.

The federal weather reporting agency put the Baffin Island hamlet under an orange weather warning at 1:21 a.m. Tuesday due to the deteriorating conditions.

Environment Canada’s colour-coded warning system was put in place in November. An orange warning means severe weather is likely to cause significant damage, disruption, or health impacts in a specific area.

Residents should avoid travel, said the weather alert from Environment Canada.

Blizzard conditions are expected to continue into Wednesday evening.

For updates, the GN is advising residents to check its social media pages or listen to local radio.
