Tying the knot in Nunavut is about to become easier and cheaper thanks to better access to marriage licences.

The Government of Nunavut is simplifying the process for obtaining the document and eliminating the $25 fee, Justice Minister David Akeeagok announced on Thursday in the legislature.

A marriage licence serves as a permit to legalize marriage. With the licence, couples may have their marriage made official in a religious or civil ceremony before a clergy member, justice of the peace or other marriage commissioner.

“Currently, most couples who want to get married in Nunavut must obtain a marriage licence from an individual appointed by the minister of justice,” he said.

Starting in April, Nunavummiut will be able to instead apply for and get the document directly from their local government liaison officer.

These officers will also be able to provide general information and guidance to members of the public about the marriage process in Nunavut, including how to obtain a marriage certificate as proof of marriage after the ceremony, Akeeagok said.

The department also opted to eliminate the $25 administrative fee for the marriage license “to ensure that marriage documents can be provided in an efficient manner,” Akeeagok said.

The minister said the decision came after the Justice Department heard from Nunavut couples that were struggling to find somebody who could issue marriage licences in their communities.

It’s not about the fee, it’s the availability of the license.

Easy to get into, doesn’t mean easy to get out of.

Always get legal and financial advice before taking the plunge!

Is it necessary to leave bitter comments and share your views on marriage that nobody asked for?
That’s not what the article is about.

And someone who did go through this process, it was annoying not being able to get marriage license because the only person who issues them was on vacation. So you literally have to plan your wedding around that person’s vacation lol.
So it’s great news that Dept of Justice made it easier for those who do believe in marriage and want to get married.
