A territory-wide campaign to promote Inuktut will start this summer ahead of the 2026 Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq language month, Nunavut’s Department of Culture and Heritage announced Wednesday.

The initiative will begin on Nunavut Day, July 9, and continue through to Sept. 19, the department said Wednesday in a public service announcement.

A series of events and activities will be held throughout the territory to celebrate and strengthen the use of Inuktut, culminating in next year’s annual month-long observance in February.

Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq, which means “celebration of our language,” was launched in 2000 as a weeklong event. It expanded to two weeks in 2015 and to a full month in 2016.

The event has traditionally been held in February but in 2023 and 2024 it was held in April with recent themes highlighting the qulliq and nattiq, or seal.

The Department of Culture and Heritage said Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq promotes the importance, history and diversity of Inuktut across Nunavut.

It encouraged residents to celebrate the language every day through storytelling, games, and by participating in the conversation on social media using the hashtag #Quviasuutiqarniq.
