GN helps hamlets pay fuel bills
The Government of Nunavut will spend an extra $1.5 million within the current 2006-07 fiscal year to help municipal governments pay their fuel bills.
The GN, which buys Nunavut’s entire fuel supply each year and re-sells it to Nunavummiut through various contracted distributors, raised retail fuel prices by 10 cents a litre for all fuel products this past Nov. 1.
At the time, Levinia Brown, the minister of Community and Government Services, said her officials were still studying the impact on Nunavut’s cash-strapped municipal governments.
In a press release issued this past week, Brown said the new money would flow to municipalities within the regular base funding transfers that they receive from the GN.
