GN to run rescue training

IQALUIT — The Nunavut government wants to improve marine safety in the territory.

It’s joining forces with the Canadian Coast Guard to offer intensive search-and-rescue training to Nunavut residents.

In many communities, local volunteers go out on emergency search-and-rescue missions, often using their own boats. Now they’ll get more training, safety equipment and money for the use of their boats.

Rescue training is expected to begin in several Nunavut communities this summer.

The GN-Coast Guard agreement, announced last week, is worth $645,000 over the next three years.
