Nunavut’s top doctor encourages residents to get out on the land

Dr. Michael Patterson, Nunavut’s chief public health officer, confirmed today that it is safe for residents to set up their summer tents, despite the fact that Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park remains closed under the public health emergency. However, Patterson said that throughout the public health emergency due to COVID-19 he’s been encouraging people to head out on the land. A previous version of this caption said it was okay to set up tents at Sylvia Grinnell Park. Territorial parks remain closed. (Photo by Meagan Deuling)

Why are there two sets of locked barriers at the entrance to Grinnell Park and signs indicating that the Park is closed during the pandemic event?

Why has GN continually published that all territorial parks are closed during the pandemic event?

Because they are closed under the public health emergency declaration and they will stay closed. You will need to find someplace else to go on the land.

How does one reconcile your “public health emergency declaration” and your orders:
” … they will stay closed. [y]ou will need to find someplace else to go on the land…”, with: your high-level epidemiology and immunology expertise and the grocery stores remaining open?

Inuit wake up. You have been asleep too long. Too much for the mall. Now you’re having a prescription really to get out on the land. This must be the easiest prescription written by the said doctor, but shame on those that need such.

Nunavik started off with a 9 pm curfew , relaxed it to 10pm because of more day light. Then relaxed again for people going out hunting and fishing. It appears now that there’s really no followed curfew. Who are the ones that are enforcing the curfew in Nunavik? Was anyone stopped recently for non complaint? In the beginning, there was a problem with drunks drinking around, kids out. As I see it people going out on the land most, are not follow much distance. It’s like nothing of a curfew. Not sure if that’s good bad or indifferent, but it is.
