Got an old couch or washer to get rid of? Iqaluit sets week of free pickup dates
City’s annual large-item pickup program runs June 24 to 29 based on regular trash collection schedule
Iqaluit residents can put their old freezers, couches, rolled-up carpets and other large household items out for pickup next week.
From June 24 to 29, items like these will be taken away for free as part of the municipality’s annual large-item pickup program, the City of Iqaluit announced Wednesday.
Commercial zones such as downtown, West 40 and Sivumugiak Street (formerly Federal Road) are not included, the city said in a release.
Residents can dispose of the following items:
- Two appliances, including items like washers, dryers, refrigerators, freezers and stoves.
They’re also allowed to put out three large household items that weigh 50 pounds or more and are too large to fit into a black garbage bag. That includes:
- Furniture like couches, chairs and mattresses;
- Flooring, including carpets and linoleum bundled to a maximum 1.7 metres by one metre (one bundle equals one bulk item);
- Plumbing fixtures, including toilets;
- Windows and mirrors.
The items will be picked up on each individual’s regular residential garbage pickup day.
The city advises the items should be placed separately from the regular residential waste. They should be organized by material, and placed into piles but not stacked.
Items not intended to be taken away, such as bicycles, should be kept clear of pick-up areas.
Items that will not be collected and must be taken to the landfill for disposal include electronics, household hazardous waste, tires and auto parts, batteries and propane tanks.
A full list of eligible materials is on the City of Iqaluit website.
