Gov. Gen. Mary May Simon and her husband, Whit Fraser, received the first poppies of the Royal Canadian Legion’s 2021 Poppy Campaign at a ceremony at Rideau Hall’s Tent Room on Monday morning.

The annual ceremony also marked 100 years since the legion, then called the Great War Veterans Association, first adopted the poppy as a symbol of remembrance in 1921, just three years after the end of the First World War.

After receiving their poppies, May Simon and Fraser presented poppies to a group of veterans, cadets and Canadian Forces members.
