Governor General to visit Nunavik
On Tuesday, Adrienne Clarkson, the Governor General of Canada, and her husband John Ralston Saul will begin a weeklong visit to Nunavik.
On March 13 the members of the official delegation will arrive in Kuujjuaq, where they plan to stay until the 16th. While there they plan to meet with elders, students at Jaanimmarik School and officials from the Kativik Regional Government and Kuujjuaq municipality.
On Wednesday evening Clarkson will preside over a community feast at the Kuujjuaq Forum where she will present service medals to Canadian Rangers.
Two trips to neighbouring Ungava Bay communities are on the agenda. On Thursday, Clarkson and company will travel to Kangirsuk where they are to review the local Junior Rangers. A feast is also in the works, as is a meeting with members of Makivik Corporation’s board of directors.
On Friday, the delegation will visit Kangiqsualujjuaq, the site of the disastrous Jan. 1, 1999, avalanche, before leaving on Saturday for Puvirnituq. After a stop in Inukjuak the official tour will wind up in Sanikiluaq, Nunavut.
