Greenland, Faroe boats booted from Canada
Last week Canada announced it’s shutting ports to fishing vessels from Greenland and the Faroe Islands because they’re ignoring the internationally recommended shrimp fishing quota of 144-tonnes in the North Atlantic.
This means trawlers from Greenland and the Faroe Islands that are now continuing to fish more than the recommended amount must return home to land their catches instead of offloading them in Newfoundland.
This extra travel will cut into their profits and encourage them to stop overfishing – at least that’s what Canada hopes.
In May 2002, Canada closed its ports to the Faroes and didn’t reopen them until they agreed to comply with quotas set by the North Atlantic Fisheries Organization.
