Group to address firearms issues

IQALUIT — Nunavik’s senator in Ottawa wants to organize an Inuit working group to address concerns about the federal firearms law.

In collaboration with the Canadian Firearms Centre, Senator Charlie Watt is asking Inuit organizations around the North to participate in the group.

Under the proposal, Inuit from Nunavut, Nunavik, Labrador and the Inuvialuit settlement region will provide recommendations on how the firearms regime can be better suited to Inuit treaty rights and hunters’ needs.

The recommendations would then be taken to Justice Minister Anne McLellan, who has already said she supports the forming of the group.

It is expected that Nunavut Tunngavik will appoint two Nunavummiut to participate in the working group.
