Half of the positions in Nunavut’s Fire Marshal’s office are vacant.

Community and Government Services Minister David Joanasie gave the update to the legislative assembly Thursday in response to questions from Aivilik MLA Solomon Malliki.

The fire marshal’s office is responsible for fire prevention and fire safety training. People who work in the office provide fire safety inspections, fire prevention training and conduct investigations into fires.

The fire marshal also acts as the primary contact for the GN’s departments and agencies on all fire prevention issues and serves as immediate supervisor of the deputy fire marshal and community fire chiefs.

There are 16 total positions in the office, with eight that need to be filled.

Earlier this month, Naujaat’s community hall burned down, leaving the hamlet to find other spaces to hold important programming and services.

Malliki, who represents Naujaat in the assembly, said that his community is still waiting to hear the cause of that fire.

At the time, the fire marshal’s office and the Nunavut RCMP said they were investigating.

News flash its likely that half the jobs across the Territory are vacant, and that doesnt account for those that are filled with full-time crochet technicians making 6-figures. You want to fill jobs with qualified people? Well then build more staff housing or put GN offices in big cities like Ottawa and Winnipeg. Easy

It’s pretty close. In June 2022, there were 5,488.33 positions in the GN and 1,997.35 vacancies. 36.4% of all GN positions are vacant.

It would also help if human resources actually posted all vacant positions. How hard is it to do that?

    Fire Safety?

quit letting little kids set fire to our critical infrastructure like schools, coops, community halls and peoples homes.

raise your kids to respect property, yours, mine, ours, the frickin dog house. not yours, don’t mess with it.
