Helping prevent hunger over the holidays

The Kitikmeot Inuit Association is distributing packages of meat to about 1,600 Inuit households in western Nunavut over the next four months. The first packages, distributed over the weekend, include hamburgers, seasoned chicken, ground beef, breakfast sausages, prime rib steaks, sirloin steaks, Swiss steaks, beef strips, chicken drumsticks and thighs, pork chops and pork side ribs. The program is funded with $5.8 million from the federal government to alleviate hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic. (Photo by Richard Webster)

My (Inuit) wife applied but is apparently ineligible. How do they decide who gets this?

And how is it that federal funds are being distributed solely on the basis of race?

Is ur Inuk wife a Kitikmeot beneficiary? This Meat Voucher program is only for the Kitikmeot beneficiaries living in the Kitikmeot region.

It is saddening that non-Inuit who have made Kitikmeot home all their lives, and have contributed so much to these communities, never receive any support or thank you from KIA or anyone for that matter. A lot of these non-Inuit are struggling to get by just like many Inuit. In case any non-Inuit from Kitikmeot read my comment, I want to let you know from myself & my family that we recognize your contributions & that we appreciate you. 👏🙏❤

Thank you! Even that small token of recognition means a lot to me.

Baffin region as well got boxes, i think they went to every household, it was enough for a christmas dinner, including ham and boneless turkey loaf.

its a small gesture, it means well. this year has been hard on everyone, even though i’m employed, its been very difficult for me as well. I’m trying so hard to get into the christmas spirit, we all should try a little.
