Icebreaking operations will be carried out around Iqaluit starting Friday.

The CCGS Amundsen, a Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker, will be assisting with the Woodward Group of Companies’ annual resupply, the City of Iqaluit announced Monday.

After that work is done, the Amundsen will lead the tanker M/V Kitikmeot W toward the city on July 2 until the vessel is able to proceed alone.

Ahead of the operations, the city advised residents to use caution if travelling in the bay, remove any equipment and property from the ice, and steer clear of ice activities.

“Due to the nature of icebreaking, the ice can be pushed instead of broken, causing it to crack or break far from the location of the icebreaker,” creating a safety risk, the city’s release said.

Residents are advised that the shifted ice can present safety risks “to people and property” and to act with caution.
