Iceland sending seal to China

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

The Iceland Journal reports an Icelandic company has received the licences to export seal meat to China. The Reykjavik company plans to ship several tonnes of frozen seal meat to China, which exporters say has a booming seal market.

However, the Chinese market has been hard for northern seal producers to crack. In 1999, a Greenlandic state-owned company called Puisi A/B was to sell seal blubber to a company in China that would manufacture vitamins and sausage. But when a delegation from Greenland went to inspect the factory, it was non-existent, and the Greenland home rule government lost about $10 million in the scam.
