Igloolik fire under investigation

Police are treating a minor fire that caused $100 in superficial damage to Igloolik’s community hall on Dec. 31 as suspicious, said Mayor Elijah Evaluarjuk.

A teen dance was under way at 3:30 a.m. when bystanders noticed smoke coming from the building’s hallway.

No one was injured in the early-morning blaze. Three volunteer firefighters were medevaced to Iqaluit where they were treated for chemical exposure from the firefighting materials.

Evaluarjuk said the fire was quickly contained and the RCMP are continuing their investigation.

“We’ve heard someone lit the fire on purpose,” Evaluarjuk said.
