Mary Simon’s historic term as Canada’s first Indigenous governor general comes to an end Monday morning.

After nearly five years, Simon is set to hand the reins over to Louise Arbour on June 8.

Simon’s tenure included many memorable moments. She met presidents and royalty. She presided over ceremonies and played accordion for a crowd in Kangiqsualujjuaq, where she was born.

Nunatsiaq News reporters were there with their cameras to capture many of those moments.
