Inuit employment reaches new low at Raglan
Numbers tabled at the KRG council meeting show that despite many millions of dollars spent in training, Inuit employment at Nunavik’s Raglan nickel mine is lower than ever.
Of the 599 workers at Raglan, only 71 or 13 per cent are Inuit, and this number includes some who are employed on special projects.
Last summer, the total number of Inuit workers in the mine’s workforce stood at 16.6 per cent, still falling short of the goal for Inuit employment of 20 per cent.
Other joint ventures between Inuit and companies working at the Raglan mine site include Kattiniq Transport, which has no Inuit among its 15 employees, and Bradley Nuvumiut, with three Inuit out of 33 employees.
Kiewit Nuvumiut Inc. does much better: there are 26.5 per cent or 13 Inuit among its 49 employees.
